The phone rang. I picked up. It was Carl yet again. Carl calls throughout the week, every week. Somebody should rip off that dude's phone. He says "Howdy." One word followed by total silence. Carl has made a habit of this.
I moved into in Carl's neighborhood a year ago. Everyone knows each other so Carl posits this communion, this happenstance proximity is consent to reign over communication like Carl is the most affable Mussolini in history.
So what did he have to tell me this time? In a hurried and strangely ecstatic voice he tells me to come by his place; he wanted to show me something. I walk over following an exhaustive list of excuses. He was great at this. If he is great at one thing, it is exactly unfurling
His yard is as obnoxious as Carl's temperament. Marking winter ending he's set-up a large, decorative rabbit. Gaudy, swaying, it greets me as I approach his porch. Carl opens his door before I can ring the doorbell. He has a large smirk. He leads me by my arm towards the front lawn. Carl looks up. I look up. I wonder why. Things aren't looking up.
"See that?" Not really, I respond. "It's a brand new gutter cover." Great. "I love it". That cover prevents debris from blocking water flow, which limits the amount of cleaning service I have to provide."For once, Carl's idea was actually helpful.
